Find out what foods helped Chef Alton Brown lose – and keep off – 50 lbs.
Chef Alton Brown is no stranger to food. In fact, as the host of The Next Iron Chef and Good Eats, he is a respected authority on everything that goes on in the kitchen.
So when he decided to lose some weight, he came up with a list of four foods that helped him shed 50 lbs, a weight loss that he was able to maintain for more than two years.

List 1: Foods to eat every day
- Green leafy vegetables
- Walnuts
- Carrots
- Green Tea
- Whole grains
- fruit
These foods should be part of their daily diet. Whole grains like oatmeal are high in fiber, so they fill you up and keep you satiated for longer.
Additionally, soluble fiber controls your cholesterol levels and reduces your risk of heart disease. And fruits, especially purple ones like blueberries, blackberries, and Concord grapes, are rich in antioxidants and revivetrol, which are known to promote longevity.
To get these foods every day, Brown freezes the berries in pre-shared packets and uses them in smoothies or just eats them.
Also, walnuts are a good source of protein and you can easily consume them every day by eating a handful about 15 minutes before a large meal to help control overeating.
List 2: Foods to eat three times a week
- Yogurt
- Cauliflower
- Broccoli
- Sweet potatoes
- Avocado
- Oily fish
- tofu
These foods are moderately healthy for you. For example, sardines are rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acids, which are very good for the heart; Also, tiny bones contain calcium.
Additionally, tofu is a great low-calorie meat substitute that actually contains more protein in calories than ground beef. Brown often uses tofu in pasta sauces, tacos, and deep-fry dishes.
Cauliflower and broccoli are cruciferous vegetables that have been praised for their anti-cancer properties, such as antioxidants that help your body rid itself of toxins that can damage cells.
List 3: Foods to eat once a week
- Red meat
- White starch
- Sweet
- Alcohol
These are foods that you should include all at once. For example, Brown's main motive with alcohol is: "If you have one drink a week, count it.
" So you choose a drink or a sweet that you like a lot and savor it, without eating something that you can drink in large quantities, but that you do not like very much.
List 4: food/meals should never be avoided at all times
- soda
- Processed foods
- Soup can
"Diet" is something
These are foods that you must eliminate completely. Brown found that when he drank diet sodas or processed foods, he ate more sweets and processed foods and contributed to his weight gain. And artificial sweeteners may be to blame.
Studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can be addictive and put the taste buds into overdrive, causing the body to secrete more insulin, a hormone that helps store body fat. So instead, he stopped including these foods in his diet altogether.
